“Evidence is necessary to arrest a person under SC-ST act”

Mangaluru: In an SC-ST grievance redressal meeting, the Superintendent of Police Rishikesh Sonawane has said that evidence is necessary to nab an accused in an SC-ST Act case.

The meeting was held at the office of the SP office where a question was raised about the arrest of a person under the atrocity act. Mr. Sonawane replied that it is wrong to assume that an accused will be arrested soon after a complaint is filed under the Act. “There should be evidence showing the cognizable offense for an arrest to be made,” he said.

He further said that directions will be issued to police station heads and also beat constables regarding these things. Also, police will regularly meet the areas and colonies of the SC-ST community.

Sonawane is a 2015 batch IPS officer who took charge as SP of Dakshina Kannada in April.
