UP: Dalit girl shot dead by her brothers for marrying a Brahmin man

Lucknow: In a suspected case of honor killing, a 22-year-old woman, who had recently married a Brahmin man, was shot dead by her brothers at the residence of her husband. The accused has also fired a shot at her husband Karan Goswami who is battling for his life at a government hospital.

The incident took place in the Bhratwal area of the Mainpuri district which comes under the Kotwali police station limits.

Police identified the deceased as Komal Khatik who eloped with Karan Goswami on April 20.

As many as four persons, including the woman’s uncle, Dilip Khatik, entered the house and shot Komal and Karan, SP Ashok Kumar Rai said.

A probe confirmed that Goswami and the Dalit woman were in a relationship and had tied the nuptial knot a few days ago.

The woman’s relatives had opposed their marriage and didn’t want her to marry a Brahmin man. The accused is on run and will be arrested soon, said police.
