“Kerala won’t implement CAA”, says CM Vijayan

Thiruvananthapuram: The Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday swore that his government would not implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

He was speaking at a function organised to mark the conclusion of his government’s first anniversary celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram.

“The government has a clear position on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). That will continue”, Vijayan said.

Vijayan also declared the CAA a violation of the secular nature of the constitution. He further added that the State government has taken a firm stand against CAA and that citizenship would not be determined based on religion.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 which was passed by the Parliament of India on December 11, 2019, but is yet to be implemented, aims to grant citizenship to those members of the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who faced persecution in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
