Tamil Nadu bats for caste-based reservation in private sector

Chennai: The State Government has joined the other opposition parties’ row to demand a national caste-wise census and to bring the constitutional amendment to provide reservation in the private sector.

“We would urge the Union government to bring in a law providing job reservation for marginalized communities in the private sector and also to conduct a caste census”, Minister for Backward and Most Backward classes SS Sivasankar said on Wednesday.

“It is felt that reservation in the private sector is essential. The objective of reservation in the private sector can be realized only by bringing a constitutional amendment”, he added.

The state minister also batted for proper implementation of the 27 percent reservation for Other Backward Classes(OBCs) in the admission of students for major institutions like IITs, IIMs and AIIMs, saying that it was not being done now.

State conducts its own caste census

Local media reports that the state government has revived the commission set up by the previous AIADMK government for the collection of caste data. Before TN, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar had promised to conduct a state-wise caste census to count the population of castes.
