Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Saturday said it had detained two people, including the alleged mastermind, responsible for the arson attack on Hindu houses at Boro Karimpur village in Rangpur’s Pirganj.
The detainees are prime suspects and expelled local Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Saikat Mandal, 24, of Cheragpur Mondolpara village under Ramnathpur union of Pirganj upazila, and his associate and imam of a mosque Md Robiul Islam, 36, of Khejmatpur village of the same upazila, who locals claim is a former member of Islami Chhatra Shibir.
It has been reported that they used mosque loudspeakers to instigate people to attack the Hindu village.
Police have filed three cases — two under the Digital Security Act and one under the Penal Code — against them at Pirganj police station.
RAB 13 earlier arrested under the same charges some people, who provided information on the mastermind during interrogation, said Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of the force’s Legal and Media Wing.
“The arrestees [Saikat and Robiul], during primary interrogation, revealed that they had gathered the attackers by spreading propaganda on social media and using loudspeakers for the arson attack, creating chaos and destroying communal harmony,” Al Moin said.
Mastermind Saikat was studying honors [undergraduate] at a degree college of Rangpur, he claimed his affiliation with the Chhatra League, a ruling party’s student wing.
Meanwhile, the Rangpur Carmichael College unit of the Chhatra League expelled Saikat from the post of vice-president of its philosophy department through a press release signed by its president and general secretary on Saturday, on allegations that he was involved in anti-party activities.
