New Delhi: In the last 3 years, the Central Government has spent more than 5100 crores on the scholarships of minority students.
Responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the Ministry of Minority Affairs has approved the economic development of six notified minority communities, namely Buddhists, Christians, Jains, Muslims, Parsis, and Sikhs in all States/UTs across the country. The government has implemented pre-matric and post-matric scholarship schemes for the educational empowerment of students belonging to weaker sections.
The Minister further informed that since the year 2014-15, more than 5.1 crore scholarships have been provided through National Scholarship Portal and Direct Benefit Transfer (NSP), out of which more than 52% of the beneficiaries are women.
“The budget allocated for the last three years under these schemes is Rs 5253.31 crore while the amount released for the same period is Rs 5123.04 crore”, Naqvi added.
Earlier 520 crores were spent on Madrasas
Earlier it was reported by the government that in the last 5 years, the Central Government has allocated Rs.520.54 crore under SPEMM, a scheme to provide economic assistance to madrassas.
