Washington, D.C.: US President Donald Trump has linked the ongoing student protests in France to mass migration and Islam, as demonstrations involving hundreds of thousands of people took place across the country amid sporadic clashes with security forces.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said the unrest was a consequence of what he described as uncontrolled migration and alleged that the protests reflected a broader attempt by Islam to gain influence in France.
The remarks came as French students continued to block entrances to hundreds of high schools across the country. The protests, which began in late September, have primarily focused on demands for improved conditions in schools and have at times resulted in confrontations with security forces.
Around 250,000 demonstrators reportedly took to the streets across France on Tuesday, highlighting the scale of the unrest.
Trump and members of his administration have frequently criticised European migration policies and called for tighter controls on borders. The protests in France have also drawn attention from sections of Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement in the United States.
Several MAGA commentators have shared footage of the demonstrations and presented the unrest as a warning concerning immigration and social tensions in Europe.
The developments come ahead of the US midterm elections, with immigration emerging as a prominent political issue. Republicans have continued to emphasise migration-related concerns as they seek to retain control of Congress.
The French protests, however, stem from domestic demands concerning education and school conditions, with the demonstrations unfolding against the backdrop of wider political and social tensions in the country.
