New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a fresh examination for three subjects of the UGC-NET June 2026 session after an expert committee found multiple errors and other deficiencies in the question papers.
The retest will be conducted for English, Commerce and Sociology, following complaints received from candidates regarding errors in the respective papers. The English examination will be held on September 9 from 9 am to 12 noon, while the Commerce paper will take place on the same day from 3 pm to 6 pm. The Sociology examination is scheduled for September 10 from 9 am to 12 noon.
The UGC-NET June 2026 examination was originally conducted between June 22 and 30 across 87 subjects. The examination determines eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor positions and admission to PhD programmes.
According to the NTA, a committee was constituted after complaints highlighted several issues in the three papers. The committee identified factual, typographical and translation-related errors, including misspelled names of scholars, distorted book titles, problems in question wording, grammatical mistakes, punctuation errors and inconsistencies involving gender and number.
The committee also noted the use of non-standard coined terms for established concepts and the repetition of a significant number of questions that had appeared in earlier examinations. It recommended conducting the examinations again to ensure fairness and accuracy.
The NTA said the deficiencies were extensive enough that they could not be adequately addressed simply by dropping problematic questions during the answer-key challenge process. Consequently, the agency decided to conduct fresh examinations for the three subjects.
Candidates appearing for the retest will not be required to pay an additional examination fee. Information regarding examination cities, centres and admit cards will be released separately through the NTA’s official website.
Meanwhile, results for the other 84 subjects for which the answer-key challenge process has been initiated will be declared according to the existing schedule. The NTA stated that the retest will not delay the allocation of JRF seats or the issuance of eligibility certificates for these subjects.
For the three affected subjects, the number of candidates qualifying for Assistant Professor eligibility will be based on the prescribed criteria, with the agency stating that the number already allocated to each subject will not be reduced after the retest.
