Madhya Pradesh to Introduce Uniform Civil Code Bill in Monsoon Session, CM Mohan Yadav Says Only One Marriage Will Be Legally Recognised

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday reiterated his government’s commitment to implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, announcing that the proposed legislation will be approved in the next Cabinet meeting before being introduced during the upcoming monsoon session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly.

Addressing a public event, Yadav advocated for a common legal framework governing personal laws, arguing that there should be no distinction in legal provisions based on religion. He said the proposed UCC aims to establish “one law for everyone” and ensure equal treatment of all citizens.

Speaking about the need for uniformity in personal laws, the Chief Minister questioned why different communities should be governed by separate legal systems. Referring to marriage practices, he remarked that if one person marries only once, the same standard should apply universally. He also said that Muslim women deserve equal protection under the law.

Yadav stated that under the proposed Uniform Civil Code, only one marriage would receive legal recognition in Madhya Pradesh. According to him, individuals with a single legally recognised marriage would have legal rights under the state’s proposed framework, reinforcing the government’s intention to discourage multiple marriages.

The Chief Minister also referred to the abolition of instant triple talaq, saying the practice is no longer legally valid and that those attempting to pronounce instant triple talaq could face legal consequences under existing law. He added that the proposed UCC would further strengthen the principle of recognising only one legally valid marriage.

Outlining the government’s legislative roadmap, Yadav said the draft Bill will first be placed before the state Cabinet during its next meeting, scheduled to be held at Jagdishpur in Bhopal. Following Cabinet approval, the legislation is expected to be tabled during the forthcoming monsoon session of the Assembly.
