Annamalai Seeks Meeting With Amit Shah Amid Exit Speculation, Reportedly Plans Independent Nationalist Party in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai is reportedly preparing to launch his own political party, marking a potentially significant development in the state’s political landscape ahead of future elections. The move comes amid growing speculation about his political future and reports of differences with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s central leadership over key strategic and ideological issues.

According to sources, Annamalai has declined multiple offers from the BJP leadership, including possible responsibilities at the national level and a potential Rajya Sabha nomination. Sources further claimed that he has decided not to join any existing political formation in Tamil Nadu, including actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and is instead considering the launch of an independent political outfit based on a nationalist agenda.

The reports gained momentum after Annamalai met BJP national secretary B.L. Santhosh and BJP president Nitin Nabin on Tuesday. The meetings took place amid increasing speculation over whether the former IPS officer-turned-politician is preparing to chart an independent political course.

Sources indicated that Annamalai’s decision may have been influenced by recent developments surrounding the BJP’s alliance with the AIADMK. Concerns have reportedly emerged within his camp over the party’s attempts to position itself as not being opposed to Tamil Nadu’s dominant Dravidian political tradition. These developments are believed to have contributed to differences between Annamalai and sections of the BJP leadership.

Although Annamalai has not publicly commented on the reports, political observers view the possibility of a new party as a development that could alter political equations in Tamil Nadu. His growing popularity among sections of young voters and his strong social media presence have helped him build a distinct political identity over the past few years.

Speculation about a possible political launch intensified after posters featuring Annamalai appeared across Coimbatore. The posters carried his photograph along with the slogan, “Fearless minds gave no limits,” prompting discussions about his next political move. Adding to the speculation, Annamalai has reportedly skipped two recent BJP state central committee meetings.

Supporters have also pointed to increased activity within his fan and welfare organisation, Annamalai Anbu Koottam. The group is reportedly enrolling new members and appointing office-bearers, moves that many political observers interpret as groundwork for a future political organisation.

Reports of friction between Annamalai and the BJP leadership have also surfaced in recent weeks over the implementation of the three-language policy. Last week, he urged the Union Education Ministry to withdraw a notification that made the study of three languages compulsory for Class IX students from the current academic year. He instead advocated adherence to the previously announced timeline, under which the policy would be implemented from the 2029-30 academic year.

In addition, Annamalai’s relationship with AIADMK leaders reportedly deteriorated ahead of the Assembly elections, particularly following his remarks concerning former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and Dravidian icon C.N. Annadurai. The controversy is believed to have deepened tensions between the BJP and its ally and may have played a role in the leadership changes within the party’s Tamil Nadu unit.

While no official announcement has yet been made, the possibility of Annamalai launching a new political party is being closely watched by political observers, as it could introduce a new force into Tamil Nadu politics and reshape alliances ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
