New Delhi: India and the United States have commenced a fresh round of high-level trade negotiations in New Delhi, with discussions scheduled from June 1 to June 4. The talks are expected to focus on finalising an interim trade agreement while addressing a range of key issues, including tariffs, market access, customs facilitation, non-tariff barriers, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, pharmaceuticals and emerging technologies.
The negotiations come at a crucial time for bilateral relations, as both countries seek to deepen economic cooperation and strengthen supply chain resilience amid changing global trade dynamics. According to officials, the discussions are aimed at resolving outstanding issues and laying the groundwork for a broader and more comprehensive trade partnership in the future.
The US delegation is being led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch, while Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary in India’s Department of Commerce, is heading the Indian side. The latest round follows a recent visit by an Indian delegation to Washington, where negotiators reportedly worked on resolving the remaining issues in the proposed agreement.
Speaking last week, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor expressed optimism about the progress of the negotiations, stating that the talks had entered their final phase. He noted that both sides were working toward concluding the deal in the coming weeks and months.
Trade relations between India and the United States have witnessed significant growth over the past two decades. Bilateral trade has expanded from approximately $20 billion to $220 billion, reflecting increasing economic integration and cooperation across multiple sectors.
Ambassador Gor highlighted that the relationship is increasingly being driven by innovation, investment and high-value industries. He pointed to sectors such as digital trade, advanced manufacturing, energy and emerging technologies as areas with strong potential for future collaboration.
A major focus of the talks is expected to be cooperation in the critical minerals sector. Last week, the two countries established a framework to enhance collaboration in this area, a move that assumes greater significance amid concerns over global supply chains and China’s export controls on rare earth elements.
Pharmaceutical cooperation is also expected to feature prominently during the discussions. The United States currently imports a substantial share of its generic medicines from India, underscoring the importance of India’s pharmaceutical industry to global healthcare supply chains.
In addition, both sides are expected to discuss partnerships in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum computing, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and digital payments. India’s potential participation in trusted technology ecosystems and resilient supply chains is likely to be an important component of the negotiations.
During his recent visit to the United States, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal reiterated India’s commitment to maintaining investor confidence, business stability and a predictable regulatory environment. The ongoing talks are expected to further strengthen economic ties between the two democracies and create new opportunities for trade, investment and technological cooperation in the years ahead.
