Sheikhpura Villagers Allege Misuse of SC/ST Act, Seek Probe into Claims of Extortion and Financial Settlements

Sheikhpura: Hundreds of residents of Dhadhsi village in Bihar’s Sheikhpura district have approached Superintendent of Police Himanshu, alleging misuse of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and demanding an impartial investigation into the matter.

In a written complaint submitted to the SP, villagers accused a man identified as Mantu Chaudhary and his wife, Sanju Devi, of allegedly implicating members of the Kewat community in cases under the SC/ST Act and subsequently accepting money to settle the disputes.

The complainants, including Rajesh Kewat, Sikandar Kewat, Kailash Kewat, Kunti Devi, Sumitra Devi, Rinku Devi and Harinder Kewat, alleged that the couple had repeatedly used such cases to harass villagers before reaching financial settlements.

They further claimed that government compensation provided under the Act had allegedly been availed of twice and alleged that preparations were underway to file another case to obtain assistance for a third time.

The villagers have urged the police superintendent to conduct a fair and thorough inquiry and take appropriate legal action against the couple if the allegations are established.

However, the allegations have not been independently verified, and the response of the accused persons was not available at the time of filing this report.
