Guwahati: The Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested six people for their alleged involvement in a financial fraud network that used mule bank accounts to route money from suspected online fraudulent transactions. The agency is also investigating possible links between the network and Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs).
The case came to the STF following a complaint lodged by Sonitpur Police based on intelligence inputs from central agencies, including Military Intelligence (MI), Gajraj, Tezpur.
During the investigation, suspicious transactions were detected in a State Bank of India (SBI) account held by Marjina Begum of Guwahati. Between June 22 and August 5, 2026, the account reportedly received lakhs of rupees through multiple transactions, with the money allegedly withdrawn shortly after being deposited.
The investigation led to the arrest of Mofijul Haque (22) and Himangshu Das (19), both residents of Bamunimaidan, along with Marjina Begum, during an STF operation on October 28.
Subsequently, Rakib Hussain (34) was arrested from Ganesh Bagar on October 29, while Iftar Hussain (25) and Arman Azuz Hoque (20) were apprehended from Uzanbazar and Ananda Bagar, respectively, on October 30.
Police seized mobile phones, laptops, electronic devices, bank passbooks, ATM cards and other documents during the raids.
Preliminary findings suggest that the network had been operating across different parts of the country for nearly two years, with the suspected proceeds potentially running into several crores of rupees.
The STF suspects that an operator based outside Assam was coordinating the network. Further investigation is underway to trace the money trail, identify additional accounts and establish the suspected links with Pakistan Intelligence Operatives.
