Sultanpur: A demonstration was held in Jaisinghpur, Sultanpur, on Wednesday under the leadership of the Rashtriya Savarna Parishad over demands concerning the reservation system, the SC/ST Act and University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations.
Several organisations, including the All India Brahmin Ekta Parishad, participated in the protest. The demonstrators marched from Maa Gayatri Restaurant on Kadipur Road towards the tehsil complex, carrying posters and pamphlets and raising slogans in support of their demands.
After reaching the tehsil office, the protesters submitted a memorandum addressed to the President to Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sandeep Kumar Yadav.
A key demand in the memorandum was that economic condition and genuine financial hardship should receive greater consideration in the reservation system. The protesters called for the issue to be addressed through the constitutional process and referred to the existing constitutional provision for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).
The protesters also sought a review of laws and policies concerning Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. They said legislation should ensure justice and equal opportunity for all sections and called for consideration of safeguards against the alleged misuse of laws.
The memorandum further raised concerns over UGC regulations and called for relevant provisions to be reconsidered through dialogue with stakeholders.
Ayodhya division in-charge Major Subedar Gauri Shankar Sharma said there was resentment among members of the general category over reservation and the SC/ST Act. National Upper Caste Council district president Amit Kumar Upadhyay said the demonstration was not intended to oppose the rights of any community, but to democratically place demands for equal justice and opportunity before the government.
Hundreds of people participated in the demonstration, according to the report.
