New Delhi: Delhi Police has de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated venue for protests and demonstrations, replacing it with three alternative locations in the national capital, according to an official order issued on October 11.
Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar issued a standing order designating Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi as the new venues for organising protests and demonstrations.
According to the order, the decision was taken in accordance with recommendations made by a committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to examine alternative venues for public protests and demonstrations.
Delhi Police said a detailed and revised standard operating procedure (SOP) governing protests at the three newly designated venues would be issued separately.
The development comes amid protests against the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, as well as police crackdowns on demonstrators in the national capital.
Jantar Mantar has traditionally served as a prominent location for public demonstrations, allowing individuals and organisations to raise various political and social demands.
The standing order marks a change in the designated locations for holding such demonstrations in Delhi.
