“Brahmins Are My Enemies; Killing Them Will Keep Me Safe”: Accused Carry Out Cleaver Attack, Victim’s Brain Spilled on Floor

New Delhi: A shocking incident of extreme violence shook East Delhi on Sunday when the wife of a temple priest was brutally murdered inside a temple located barely 200 metres from the Mansarovar Park police station. The daylight killing, carried out with a sharp-edged weapon, has sent waves of fear across the locality and raised serious questions about law and order, police vigilance, and the safety of religious places in the national capital.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, the incident took place inside the Jwala Ji Temple, where two young men arrived posing as visitors and began enquiring about the temple priest. When they discovered that the priest was not present at the time, they turned their attention towards his wife, who was inside the temple premises. In a sudden and ferocious attack, one of the assailants struck her repeatedly on the head with a gandasa (cleaver), killing her on the spot. The assault was so violent that the victim suffered catastrophic head injuries, leaving the temple floor drenched in blood.

The deceased has been identified as Kusum Sharma, wife of Mahesh Chand Sharma, who has been serving as the priest of the Jwala Ji Temple for the past 36 years. The Sharmas are originally from Paitha village in Mathura district and have been living in the Mansarovar Park area for several years. Kusum Sharma is survived by her husband, a son, and two daughters.

Mahesh Chand Sharma told the police that he had opened the temple early in the morning at around 5 a.m., as part of his daily routine. At approximately 11:10 a.m., his wife arrived at the temple from their residence. A few minutes later, at around 11:15 a.m., he left the temple to attend a religious ceremony at a devotee’s house nearby. Within just 15 minutes of his departure, he received a frantic phone call informing him that his wife had been attacked inside the temple.

When he rushed back to the temple, he was confronted with a horrifying scene. His wife lay motionless, surrounded by blood, while an injured devotee was also present inside the temple. The second victim, identified as Beena, a middle-aged woman who had come to offer prayers, had attempted to intervene and save Kusum Sharma. In response, the attacker struck her on the head as well, leaving her seriously injured. Beena was immediately rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that one of the attackers remained stationed at the temple gate, apparently keeping watch, while the other entered the inner premises and carried out the assault. After committing the crime, both assailants fled the scene. Their escape was partially captured on nearby CCTV cameras, footage of which is now being examined by the police.

The Mansarovar Park police station registered a case under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including murder and attempt to murder. During the course of the investigation, one accused, identified as Anchal Saxena, has been taken into police custody. However, police officials stated that the accused has been repeatedly changing his statement during interrogation, making it difficult to ascertain his exact motive.

According to initial police findings, the accused had purchased the gandasa from Chandni Chowk. During questioning, he reportedly claimed that he feared for his own life and had bought the weapon for self-defence. Police sources further revealed that the accused appeared to harbour deep-seated fears and misconceptions, believing that Brahmins were his enemies. He allegedly believed that killing a Brahmin would ensure his own safety, which led him to target the priest’s wife.

Senior police officials, however, have cautioned that these claims are part of the ongoing investigation and that no conclusion has yet been reached. The police are also probing the possibility that the murder may have been premeditated and linked to a long-standing land dispute involving the temple.

Mahesh Chand Sharma informed investigators that a family living adjacent to the temple has been embroiled in a legal dispute with him over temple land for several years. The matter is currently pending before a court. He alleged that tensions had escalated recently and that he had received threats approximately ten days prior to the incident. Based on these claims, the police are examining whether the murder was orchestrated as part of this ongoing dispute.

Investigators are questioning several individuals connected to the dispute and are analysing call records, financial transactions, and CCTV footage from the surrounding area to establish any possible conspiracy. The police have not ruled out the involvement of additional suspects and stated that further arrests may follow.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage among local residents, who have raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of policing in the area. The fact that such a brutal murder occurred in broad daylight, just a short distance from a police station, has intensified criticism of law enforcement.

Residents pointed out that this is the second murder to have taken place near the Mansarovar Park police station within the past month. Only days earlier, a teenager was shot dead near a banquet hall close to the police station during a wedding procession. Locals allege that police patrolling in the area is inadequate and that criminals appear to operate without fear of consequences.

Several residents demanded increased police presence, regular patrols, and stricter monitoring through CCTV cameras. Some also called for accountability, arguing that repeated incidents of violent crime so close to a police station reflect poorly on the overall security apparatus.

Responding to the incident, Shahdara district Deputy Commissioner of Police Prashant Gautam stated that the police had taken the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem examination, which is scheduled to be conducted on Monday. He added that the investigation is being carried out from multiple angles, including personal enmity, mental health factors, and the alleged land dispute.

“The CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being thoroughly examined to identify all those involved. We are committed to ensuring that every person connected with this crime is brought to justice,” the DCP said.

The brutal nature of the killing has left the Mansarovar Park area in a state of shock and fear. Devotees and residents alike expressed anguish that a place of worship could turn into a scene of such horrific violence. Many families reported feeling unsafe and apprehensive, especially women and elderly residents who regularly visit nearby temples.

As the investigation continues, the incident stands as a grim reminder of the challenges facing urban policing and public safety. For now, the community mourns the loss of Kusum Sharma, while awaiting answers, accountability, and assurance that such a tragedy will not be repeated.
