UP BJP’s Warning to Brahmin Legislators Sparks Political Storm, Triggers #BJPHatesBrahmin Trend Across Social Media

A political controversy erupted in Uttar Pradesh after the state BJP leadership issued a stern warning to party legislators against holding caste- or family-based meetings, following a recent gathering of Brahmin MLAs and MLCs in Lucknow. The episode triggered a massive social media backlash, with the hashtag #BJPHatesBrahmin trending on X (formerly Twitter) and recording over 70,000 posts within a single day.

The controversy stems from a community dinner organised by more than 40 BJP legislators belonging to the Brahmin community. According to sources, the meeting was meant to discuss issues related to representation, internal consultation, and the perceived declining influence of Brahmin leaders within the party. Some participants reportedly raised concerns about favoritism towards other caste groups and the shrinking political space for upper-caste leaders, especially in the context of recent bypoll results where BJP’s upper-caste support is believed to have weakened.

Reacting sharply to the gathering, Uttar Pradesh BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary termed such meetings as a breach of party discipline. In an official warning, he stated that caste-based or family-centric assemblies go against the BJP’s constitution and ideological principles. He further cautioned that any repetition of such activities by MLAs, MLCs, or MPs would invite strict disciplinary action. Emphasising the party’s ideological position, Chaudhary reiterated that the BJP believes in politics centred on development, governance, and nationalism rather than caste equations.

The advisory, however, did not go down well with several political observers and opposition leaders, who accused the BJP of double standards. NCP leader Priyanka Chaturvedi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav questioned why caste-based forums are acceptable within the party for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBCs, and minorities, but considered indiscipline when Brahmin leaders attempt similar internal discussions. They alleged that the move reflects internal contradictions within the ruling party.

The Samajwadi Party intensified its attack by claiming that many BJP MPs and MLAs feel sidelined and unheard. SP leader Shivpal Yadav went a step further by openly inviting Brahmin leaders from the BJP to join the SP, promising them respect and meaningful political space. The Congress also joined the criticism, with leaders accusing the BJP of internal caste divisions and growing resentment among its traditional support base.

On social media, the backlash was intense. Users alleged that Brahmins are not being given adequate representation or respect in the BJP-led government, and that the warning issued to legislators only reinforced this perception. Many questioned why internal dialogue was being discouraged instead of addressed.

Meanwhile, BJP insiders argue that the advisory should be seen in the context of party unity ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. They claim the leadership is attempting to prevent factionalism and ensure a unified organisational structure.
