Tukaram Mundhe Featured on New York Times Front Page as ‘Food Safety Celebrity’

New Delhi: Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has received international attention after being featured on the front page of The New York Times, which described him as a “rockstar” and “food safety celebrity” for his high-profile crackdown on food safety violations across the state.

Mundhe, who has earned the nicknames “Singham” and “Nayak” on social media, has gained widespread recognition for his enforcement drives against establishments violating food safety and hygiene standards.

The New York Times report noted that “no business appears to escape Mundhe’s attention” and carried the strapline, “Diners revere him, and owners fear him”.

Sharing the article on X, Mundhe said good governance was not about making headlines but about making a difference. He stressed that food safety was ultimately about protecting people, upholding standards and building public trust.

Mundhe’s work has previously attracted international media attention. The BBC has reported on his popularity, while Reuters profiled his enforcement campaign under the headline, “Indian food safety officer shakes up Mumbai, one viral raid at a time”.

Since taking charge in May 2026, Mundhe and his team have reportedly conducted more than 12,000 inspections across Maharashtra. The drives have resulted in thousands of notices and the suspension of hundreds of establishment licences over serious food safety and hygiene violations.

During a festive-season enforcement drive, the FDA suspended food licences and seized 50,601.78 kg of food stock worth Rs 1.19 crore between September 23 and 27.

The development has sparked considerable reaction on social media, with users praising Mundhe’s approach to enforcement and calling for greater public support for officers working to improve governance and food safety.
