New Delhi: The Delhi Police has registered an FIR against digital commentator Ajeet Bharti over a publicly circulated video containing allegedly degrading remarks concerning Nagina MP Chandra Shekhar Azad, members of Scheduled Caste communities and Dr B.R. Ambedkar.
The FIR, registered at North Avenue Police Station on August 23, 2026, names provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The complaint was filed by Balakram Bauddh, Delhi State President of the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram).
According to the complaint, the controversial material appeared in a programme titled “SB79: Reservation Hatao Andolan Nautanki & More | Saptahik Bakaiti” and was circulated through Bharti’s verified X account. The complainant has asked investigators to obtain the original platform records, URL, account information, metadata, views, comments and repost details as part of the investigation.
The complaint cites a series of highly offensive remarks attributed to Bharti, including caste-based references, derogatory comments about Azad and explicit sexual remarks involving family members. It also refers to statements concerning reservation and Dr B.R. Ambedkar.
While the allegations contained in the complaint are serious and warrant investigation, the FIR has also triggered questions over consistency and equal application of the law. Critics of the police action have pointed to an earlier controversy involving IAS Santosh Verma, arguing that remarks attributed to him concerning the mothers and daughters of upper-caste communities did not result in comparable police action.
The comparison has raised an uncomfortable question: if offensive and inflammatory remarks are considered serious enough to warrant criminal proceedings in one case, why should similar standards not apply irrespective of the caste, political affiliation or ideological position of the person making them?
The case is now set to be examined through the legal process, with the Delhi Police expected to investigate the allegations and establish the context and authenticity of the statements in question.
