Merit Takes a Backseat: Quota Tsunami Hits Nation’s Highest Temple of Justice

Delhi: In a historic move, the Supreme Court of India has introduced reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in its staff recruitment process for the first time. The policy, which came into effect on June 23, 2025, was introduced during the tenure of Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, the second CJI from the SC community.

The development was communicated through a circular issued by the Supreme Court Registrar on June 24. The circular informed employees that the “Model Reservation Roster and Register” has been uploaded on the internal Supnet system and officially implemented.

According to the policy, SC candidates will be entitled to 15% reservation, while ST candidates will have 7.5% in direct recruitment across various staff positions. These positions include Senior Personal Assistant, Assistant Librarian, Junior Court Assistant, Junior Court Assistant-cum-Junior Programmer, Junior Court Attendant, and Chamber Attendant, among others.

The circular also invited staff members to raise objections or report inaccuracies in the roster or register to the Registrar (Recruitment).
