Mumbai: Actor Imran Khan has been asked to leave India by October 28 by the Mumbai Police, days after participating in a protest organised by the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The notice was issued under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. Khan, the nephew of actor Aamir Khan, is believed to hold US citizenship and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card rather than Indian citizenship.
The Mumbai Police said action was taken against the actor under the relevant provisions of the law for participating in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen. Section 7 of the Act empowers the Central Government to regulate or restrict the entry, departure, presence and movement of foreigners in India.
Earlier, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya had approached the Mumbai Police, alleging that Khan’s participation in the protest amounted to an illegal political agitation and violated OCI provisions and visa conditions.
Khan was among those who gathered at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10. His partner, actor Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayne Marie Khan were also present. The three were detained and subsequently released.
Speaking to the media after the incident, Khan said he had attended the gathering as a resident of Mumbai to understand why freedom of movement was being restricted and people’s voices were being suppressed.
Police had detained around 400 people during the protest, including members of the organisation ‘Hum Bharat Ke Log’, led by Tushar Gandhi, and activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
