New Delhi: Delhi Police on Tuesday detained Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) chief spokesperson Saurav Das, national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka and party member Ajinkya Shinde after they allegedly attempted to enter Jantar Mantar, days after the protest site was de-notified.
According to sources quoted by news agency PTI, Das and Ranka were detained while attempting to reach the designated protest site.
“Jantar Mantar has been reclaimed! We have entered Jantar Mantar and now we are being detained,” Das said in a social media post, urging young people to continue their campaign.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke also claimed on X that party members carrying the national flag had entered Jantar Mantar before being detained by police. “You cannot denotify the resistance, Narendra Modi,” he said.
Dipke criticised the decision to remove Jantar Mantar from the list of designated protest venues, alleging that it reflected an attempt to restrict demonstrations.
Delhi Police on Monday de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated venue for protests and demonstrations, naming Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in east Delhi as alternative locations.
The decision followed recommendations by a committee constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to examine alternative venues for public protests.
