Myanmar Assures India Its Territory Will Not Be Used Against Indian Security Interests During President Min Aung Hlaing’s Visit

New Delhi: Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing has assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Myanmar’s territory will not be allowed to be used against India’s security interests, marking a significant development in bilateral ties between the two neighbouring countries.

The assurance came during bilateral discussions held in New Delhi as part of President Min Aung Hlaing’s four-day visit to India from May 30 to June 3. The visit is particularly noteworthy as it is his first foreign trip since assuming the office of President on April 3.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that stability and peace in Myanmar remain a major strategic interest for India. In the past, New Delhi has repeatedly expressed concerns about insurgent groups from India’s Northeast allegedly operating from bases inside Myanmar. The latest assurance is expected to strengthen security cooperation between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi described the discussions as productive and highlighted the importance of Myanmar in India’s “Neighbourhood First”, “Act East” and Indo-Pacific policies. He also welcomed President Min Aung Hlaing’s decision to choose India for his first overseas visit and noted that the Myanmar leader began his trip with a visit to Bodh Gaya, a site of deep significance for Buddhists worldwide.

According to the Prime Minister, both leaders reviewed the full spectrum of India-Myanmar relations and explored opportunities to deepen cooperation in several sectors. Discussions covered trade, connectivity, healthcare, rare earth minerals, heritage restoration and capacity building.

The two sides also agreed to expand collaboration in emerging and strategic areas, including maritime security and cyber security. Infrastructure development and energy cooperation were also part of the agenda.
