Congress to Hold Local Body Polls Only After Ensuring 42% BC Reservation

Hyderabad: The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has made it clear that local body elections in the state will be conducted only after implementing 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs). This decision was taken during the PCC’s Extended Executive Committee meeting held on Monday, where senior leaders deliberated on the party’s strategy and political roadmap.

AICC state in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan emphasized that the Congress is determined to secure the promised quota for BCs. She said the party is making all-out efforts to ensure the implementation of 42% reservation before the polls, underscoring its commitment to social justice and inclusivity.

The meeting also decided to launch a strong political offensive against the BRS and BJP, accusing both parties of blocking BC reservations and misleading the public on the issue. The Congress is set to highlight these points during its upcoming public outreach programme in Kamareddy on September 15, where it will showcase the state government’s achievements while pressing for Presidential assent on the BC reservation bills.

Chaired by PCC president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud, the meeting was attended by Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, and other senior leaders. In a significant move, Bhatti proposed reopening the party’s doors to leaders who had quit Congress in the past due to various reasons. The proposal was unanimously approved, with leaders noting that those who had once worked loyally for the party’s principles should be welcomed back.

The party resolved to highlight the accomplishments of the Revanth Reddy government during its 22-month tenure, including distribution of fine rice, issuance of over 60,000 ration cards in Hyderabad, Indiramma housing projects with 3,500 houses per constituency, and timely fertilizer supply. Leaders also pointed out corruption in the Kaleshwaram project, claiming that even family members of those involved were admitting irregularities.

The Congress stressed that while implementing 42% BC reservations, quotas for SCs and STs would remain unaffected. It also recalled the role of past Congress governments in bringing Krishna, Manjeera, and Godavari Phase-I waters, while affirming that the current government is pushing ahead with Godavari Phase-II to meet people’s needs.
