Surat: Stones were pelted at an Ahmedabad-bound Vande Bharat Express near Utran railway station in Gujarat on Tuesday, damaging window panes of two coaches. One person was arrested in connection with the incident, while railway authorities said that no passenger was injured.
The train, which had departed from Mumbai Central at around 3:45 pm, was carrying Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, her daughter Anar Patel and Union Territory of Daman and Diu Administrator Praful Patel. The officials clarified that the VIP passengers were travelling in an executive coach. Actor Anang Desai was also among the passengers.
According to Western Railway officials, the Vande Bharat Express reached Surat at around 6:45 pm before proceeding towards Ahmedabad. The incident took place after the train crossed the Tapi River bridge and was nearing Utran railway station. An unidentified person allegedly threw stones at the moving train, following which the train was halted briefly before resuming its journey.
The stones reportedly struck the window panes of coaches C-6 and C-10, causing damage. Soon after the incident, teams of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) launched an operation in the area.
A man spotted allegedly moving suspiciously near the railway tracks in Kosad, around two kilometres from Utran railway station, was apprehended by the teams. Western Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek said the authorities were questioning the arrested person to ascertain the motive behind the alleged stone-pelting.
Railway authorities have not reported any injuries in the incident. Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and determine whether the arrested person was involved in the stone-pelting.
