Baruipur: The tranquil town of Baruipur in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district has been plunged into a state of volatile grief and outrage following the brutal abduction, rape, and murder of an 11-year-old girl, and the subsequent retaliatory lynching of a local man suspected of involvement. The harrowing chain of events has sparked intense public anger, with residents openly accusing local law enforcement of fatal negligence.
A Community in Mourning
The tragedy began on Saturday evening when the young girl went missing. Her family approached the Baruipur police station at approximately 9:00 PM to file a missing person report.
“Had the police started a search operation then, went through CCTV footage, my daughter could have been found alive,” the victim’s mother lamented. Her daughter, remembered by neighbors for her “smiling face and talkative nature,” was discovered dead in a village pond on Sunday morning.
The girl’s grandfather echoed these sentiments, alleging that despite community members identifying suspects via local CCTV footage and witnessing the girl being taken away in an autorickshaw-van, the police response remained inadequate. “They only sent a message to the nearby police camp. They didn’t even send a police force,” he claimed. The family is now demanding capital punishment for the perpetrators and calling for accountability for the police officers who allegedly failed to act with the necessary urgency.
Mob Justice and Escalating Violence
As news of the discovery of the body spread, the initial grief in Baruipur quickly transformed into public fury. The situation spiraled out of control on Sunday when a local mob, having identified suspects through CCTV analysis, took the law into their own hands.
Indrajit Mondol, an auto-driver, was brutally lynched by a mob of 200–300 people outside his home on Sunday morning. The mob alleged that Mondol had assisted in abducting the child. His mother, Anima, maintains his total innocence, asserting that he had returned home the previous evening and remained inside until the mob arrived. “They killed my son… Believe me, my son was innocent,” she pleaded.
An angry crowd also targeted the residence of local BJP leader Santanu Mondol, who was accused of facilitating the escape of one of the primary suspects from police custody. Neighbors described a scene of terror, with over 1,000 people ransacking the house for an hour before he and his family could flee. While some claim Santanu was targeted due to long-standing political rivalries, others argue that in the heat of the public outrage, the distinction between suspect and bystander became dangerously blurred.
Administration under Pressure
In an effort to prevent further unrest, the district administration has imposed strict restrictions on public gatherings in Baruipur, Sonarpur, and Narendrapur. A heavy police deployment currently blankets the area, aiming to restore order in a town still simmering with resentment.
However, the presence of police on the ground has not fully quelled the public’s demand for accountability. Protesters continue to congregate in the main market area, insisting on the immediate suspension of the officers who were allegedly dismissive of the family’s initial plea for help.
