Ranchi: The ongoing protest by government job aspirants and students in Jharkhand over irregularities in state government recruitment examinations has emerged as a significant political challenge for the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress alliance. Hundreds of aspirants have been staging an indefinite sit-in at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi, demanding accountability for irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by state agencies.
According to sources, a delegation led by AICC Jharkhand in-charge K. Raju, along with Congress ministers serving in the state cabinet, is scheduled to meet Chief Minister Hemant Soren to urge him to address what the party describes as the “genuine concerns” of the agitating students and job seekers.
The protest has placed the Congress in a politically sensitive position. At the national level, the party has been aggressively targeting the BJP-led Central government over allegations of examination paper leaks and recruitment irregularities. Congress leaders have also criticised the police action against student protesters at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and have repeatedly demanded accountability from the Union government during the ongoing Parliament session.
Responding publicly to the controversy for the first time, Chief Minister Hemant Soren stated that his government was taking the concerns of the job aspirants with the “utmost seriousness.” He assured that every demand and representation submitted by the protesters was being examined carefully and that appropriate decisions would be announced at the right time. Soren expressed confidence that the government’s response would reassure the protesting youth.
Beyond the immediate issue of recruitment examinations, the agitation has also exposed underlying tensions within the ruling alliance. Relations between the JMM and Congress have witnessed strains over the past year. Differences first surfaced ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, when the JMM withdrew from the electoral contest, alleging that its alliance partners, including the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), had attempted to sideline the party during seat-sharing negotiations.
More recently, friction emerged during the Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand. The Congress announced its candidate for one of the two seats expected to be won by the INDIA bloc despite the JMM’s preference to contest both seats. The Congress refused to reconsider its decision, and despite the alliance holding a numerical advantage, its candidate eventually lost due to crossvoting by ruling alliance MLAs, further straining ties between the coalition partners.
Political observers believe the outcome of the ongoing protest could have broader implications for both governance and alliance dynamics in Jharkhand. The Hemant Soren government faces mounting pressure to restore confidence in the state’s recruitment process through a credible and transparent resolution. As negotiations continue, the handling of the protest is likely to remain a key political issue in the state in the coming days.
