Phoenix: Indian American emergency medicine physician and Arizona lawmaker Dr. Amish Shah has secured the Democratic nomination for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, defeating establishment-backed candidate Marlene Galán-Woods in a closely watched primary election. The victory sets the stage for a high-profile November midterm contest against Republican nominee Jay Feely, a former National Football League (NFL) kicker endorsed by US President Donald Trump.
Shah, a three-term member of the Arizona House of Representatives, built his campaign around grassroots outreach, personally connecting with nearly 28,000 households across the district. His campaign emphasized moderate Democratic policies and direct voter engagement, helping him overcome the challenge posed by Galán-Woods, who had received backing from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Galán-Woods, a former Republican, had switched parties during Trump’s first presidential term.
Interestingly, Shah and Feely share an unusual connection. Before entering electoral politics on opposing sides, the two were associated with the same NFL team, where Shah served as the physician providing emergency medical care while Feely played as the team’s kicker.
Born to Gujarati immigrant parents who moved to the United States in the 1960s, Shah has an accomplished academic and medical background. He earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School through its Honours Program in Medical Education and later completed a Master of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley, on a full merit scholarship. He subsequently underwent emergency medicine residency training at a Level-1 trauma centre in New York City.
Following his primary victory, Shah described the result as a “grassroots victory” and pledged to work towards earning the support of Democrats, Independents and Republicans across the district.
