Sonauli: A former United States Special Forces soldier has been detained by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) while allegedly attempting to cross the Indo-Nepal border without valid travel documents, prompting a high-level security investigation by Indian intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
The individual, identified as Jordan Brown, a resident of California, was apprehended on July 11 near the Sonauli border in Uttar Pradesh. According to officials, Brown was attempting to enter Nepal through the open border but failed to produce a valid passport or visa during routine checks. The circumstances surrounding his presence in India and his attempted border crossing have raised concerns due to the strategic sensitivity of the India-Nepal frontier.
Reports indicate that Brown allegedly tried to evade security personnel. However, local residents intervened and assisted SSB personnel in surrounding and detaining him. Videos of the incident circulating on social media reportedly show villagers helping security forces prevent his escape.
Investigators have since questioned Brown, but officials say his statements regarding his travel history have been inconsistent. In one version of events, he claimed that he entered India through a sea route in November 2025 after travelling from Thailand to Sri Lanka following the loss of his passport. He further stated that he had been living in Goa since then.
However, during subsequent questioning, Brown reportedly offered a different account, claiming that he had travelled directly from the United States to India only about two months ago. According to this version, he moved through Bengaluru, Lucknow and Gorakhpur before hiring a taxi to reach Sonauli.
Authorities said Brown also claimed he was travelling to Nepal to meet a person identified only as “Naz”, but he was unable to provide any verifiable contact details. He further alleged that his passport was being kept by an acquaintance in Bengaluru, though investigators have not been able to verify the claim. Brown also stated that he married an Indian yoga instructor from Uttarakhand in 2024, a claim that remains under verification.
During the search, officials recovered two mobile phones and approximately Rs 31,460 in cash, but no passport, visa or other valid travel documents were found in his possession.
A case has been registered at Sonauli Police Station under the relevant provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act for alleged illegal entry and violations of immigration rules.
Given Brown’s assertion that he served for six years in the US military, central intelligence agencies have joined the investigation to verify his identity, military background and the purpose of his travel. Authorities are also examining the authenticity of his claims and whether any larger security concerns are linked to the incident.
Officials are also reviewing the case in the context of the earlier arrest of another American national, identified as drone expert Matthew VanDyke, in Manipur this year. While no direct connection between the two cases has been established, investigators are closely examining all aspects before drawing any conclusions.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to determine Brown’s actual movements, verify his statements and establish the reasons behind his attempt to cross into Nepal without authorised travel documents.
