Maharashtra Approves ₹1,722-Crore Sea Link Connector Project to Cut Mumbai Travel Time Significantly

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has approved a major infrastructure project worth ₹1,722.40 crore to construct a 3.55-km road connecting the Bandra Fort end of the Versova-Bandra Sea Link (VBSL) with the Savarkar Sea Bridge. The proposal received clearance from the state cabinet’s sub-committee on infrastructure, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, following approval by a committee of secretaries led by the Chief Secretary on June 17.

According to the official release, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will implement the project. The total project cost includes ₹1,183.79 crore for construction, along with expenses related to GST, land acquisition, rehabilitation and other associated costs, taking the overall investment to ₹1,722.40 crore.

The new connector is expected to substantially improve traffic movement across Mumbai. It is designed to accommodate nearly 3,500 passenger cars every hour and is projected to reduce travel time between Worli and Fort from as much as 45 minutes during peak traffic to just 5-10 minutes. Similarly, commuters travelling from Fort to Versova are expected to see journey times reduced from nearly one hour to approximately 15-20 minutes.

The project also includes provisions for rehabilitation and environmental safeguards. Around 40 hutments are expected to be affected, with ₹50 crore allocated for compensation and rehabilitation. An additional ₹20 crore has been earmarked to compensate fishermen whose livelihoods may be impacted, while another ₹20 crore has been set aside for environmental mitigation measures.

The connector forms part of the broader Versova-Bandra Sea Link project, whose revised cost has reached ₹18,120.96 crore. As of May 2026, nearly 31 per cent of the work on the sea link had been completed against the targeted progress of 35.84 per cent. The entire Versova-Bandra Sea Link project is expected to be completed by May 2028 and is anticipated to play a significant role in easing congestion and improving connectivity across Mumbai.
