PM Modi Highlights Ramayana, Mahabharata Link to Strengthen India-Indonesia Ties, Calls for Deeper Maritime Partnership

Jakarta: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday underscored the centuries-old cultural and historical ties between India and Indonesia, describing the relationship between the two nations as one deeply rooted in the shared heritage of the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the ancient wisdom of Nalanda. Addressing the Indonesian Parliament in Jakarta during his official visit, the Prime Minister called for elevating bilateral relations to new heights while emphasizing the immense potential for cooperation in the decades ahead.

Speaking before Indonesian lawmakers, Modi said that India and Indonesia are connected not merely by the sea but by a shared civilizational legacy that has flourished for centuries. He highlighted the influence of Indian culture in Indonesia through traditional art forms such as Wayang, dance, and music, as well as iconic monuments including Borobudur and Prambanan.

The Prime Minister also referred to cultural symbols that reflect the close ties between the two nations. He noted that Indonesia’s national emblem, Garuda, and the tradition of Bali Yatra serve as reminders of the long-standing relationship between the two countries. Adding a touch of warmth to his address, Modi remarked that it is difficult to decide whether Indonesia’s krupuk or India’s papad is crunchier, while observing that spices and bumbu are an integral part of both cultures.

Calling for stronger cooperation, Modi urged the Indonesian Parliament to play an active role in advancing bilateral relations. He said the names India, Indonesia, and the Indian Ocean themselves testify to the deep-rooted connection shared by the two countries. Referring to their maritime history, he said that for millennia, ports and sea routes had linked the two civilizations with the rest of the world, carrying not only trade but also culture and ideas across oceans.

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister stressed that the coming 25 years would be crucial for both India and Indonesia as they work toward shared growth and prosperity. He said the two nations stand together at a pivotal moment in history and expressed confidence that closer collaboration would contribute to the welfare of humanity.

Modi also made a light-hearted reference to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s earlier remarks on copyright. He said that no one could claim copyright over love, friendship, mutual respect, or the strong bond shared between the two nations, adding that his friendship with President Prabowo transcends all boundaries of copyright.
