Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Friday evening issued a landmark order providing 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in rural and urban local bodies across the state. The decision is seen as a major step toward strengthening political empowerment and social justice for backward communities.
Earlier this year, the state legislature had passed the Backward Classes (Reservation of Seats in Rural and Urban Local Bodies) Bill, 2025 in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council. However, the Bill is still pending with the President of India for assent.
Invoking Articles 40, 243D(6), and 243T(6) of the Constitution, the government stated that the order was necessary considering the “multi-dimensional backwardness” of BCs in Telangana across social, economic, and political indicators. The order emphasized that the move is backed by empirical evidence, legislative sanction, and judicial recognition.
