New Delhi: The Delhi Police has issued a legal notice to social media personality Anuradha Tiwari over certain past posts on X (formerly Twitter), invoking provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The action follows suo motu cognisance taken by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), which flagged the content as potentially harmful to social harmony.
According to the notice issued by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of Delhi Police, three of Tiwari’s earlier posts are under scrutiny. The authorities allege that the content may have disturbed communal harmony, spread misleading information, and carried the potential to incite disharmony or unrest among different caste groups. The notice specifically references Sections 3(1)(u) and 3(1)(v) of the SC/ST Act, which deal with promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will against members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, as well as acts that disrespect them.
Tiwari, in a series of posts, claimed that the action stemmed from her responses to a political cartoon allegedly mocking Brahmins, as well as her remarks on caste-related issues and reservation policies. She also alleged that fake screenshots and abusive content were circulated in her name by anonymous accounts, prompting her to file a cyber complaint earlier. However, she stated that no action was taken on those complaints, while she herself has now received a notice.
As of now, no First Information Report (FIR) has been registered. The development has reignited debates around the application of the SC/ST Act in the context of online speech, free expression, and the regulation of caste-related discourse on social media platforms.
