Merit Under Threat? Chirag Paswan Backs Quotas in Private Sector

New Delhi: In a significant political statement, Union Minister and NDA ally Chirag Paswan has declared that the central government is set to implement reservation in the private sector. Speaking to News24, Paswan asserted his personal support for the move and expressed confidence that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would soon take steps to formalize this decision.

“There will be reservation in the private sector and our NDA government will implement it very soon,” Paswan declared during the interview. Paswan further affirmed his loyalty to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision while emphasizing that the push for social justice remains a central priority.

“I myself am in favour of reservation in the private sector in the coming days,” Paswan reiterated, signaling that policy efforts are underway to address long-standing demands for affirmative action beyond the public sector.

During the conversation, Deputy Editor Sanjeev Trivedi pointed out the tendency of political parties to “set an agenda” when in opposition but fail to fulfill it when in power. Paswan acknowledged this critique, offering a pointed reflection on political accountability: “Why to set an agenda while being in the opposition—why not fulfill all the demands when in government itself? People forget their promises when they come into power, and when they become opposition, then they set agenda,” he said.

In his concluding remarks, the Cabinet Minister underlined that “in the coming days, many such decisions will be taken that will strengthen social justice,” hinting at a broader strategy by the NDA to address issues of representation and inclusivity.
