UP Government Grants 20% Reservation in Police Jobs for Former Agniveers, Age Relaxation Also Approved

Lucknow: In a landmark move aimed at empowering former Agniveers and acknowledging their service to the nation, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a 20% reservation in police recruitment for candidates who have completed their four-year tenure under the Agnipath scheme. The decision was formalized through a government order issued on Friday and is being hailed as one of the most generous steps taken by a state government for Agniveers so far.

According to the official order released by Sanjay Prasad, Principal Secretary (Home), this reservation will apply to several posts under the state police force, including Constable Civil Police, PAC Constable, Mounted Police, and Fireman. In addition to the reservation quota, former Agniveers will also be granted a relaxation of three years in the upper age limit.

This significant development follows a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath earlier this week. After the meeting, State Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna addressed the media, explaining that the decision is meant to ensure a meaningful continuation of service opportunities for Agniveers after their military term ends.

“This is not just a reservation policy—it is a recognition of the commitment and sacrifice shown by Agniveers. Through this initiative, we aim to integrate their discipline, experience, and dedication into the state’s security apparatus,” said Khanna.

Importantly, the reservation policy will apply across all social categories, including General, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC). For example, if a candidate belongs to the SC category and is a former Agniveer, their reservation will be considered within the SC category itself.

Recruitment under this new policy will begin with the first eligible batch in 2026.

Khanna also highlighted that while several central forces and states have initiated similar provisions—offering 10% reservation to Agniveers—Uttar Pradesh has taken a pioneering step by approving 20%. Among those offering 10% reservation are paramilitary forces such as the CISF and BSF, as well as states like Haryana and Odisha.

“This bold step by the UP Cabinet reflects the state’s commitment to national service and ensures that former Agniveers can continue to contribute to the country even after their military stint,” Khanna added.
