Jodhpur: In a heartbreaking incident in Bigmi village, located 60 kilometers from Jodhpur, three members of a family—Bhawari Devi (54) and her two sons, Navratan Singh Rajpurohit (27) and Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit (24)—committed suicide by consuming poison on December 10. The tragic event has sent shockwaves across the community, bringing to light allegations of harassment and threats from Navratan’s in-laws.
Navratan’s uncle, Raju Singh, revealed that the harassment began shortly after Navratan’s marriage four months ago. Allegedly, his wife Neetu Kanwar, her father Lal Singh, and her brothers Shravan and Hukam Singh repeatedly threatened the family with false allegations and public humiliation through a panchayat. According to the family, these threats and the fear of social ostracism became unbearable, pushing the three to take the extreme step.
Jagdish Singh Rajpurohit, Navratan’s maternal uncle, described the emotional toll the threats had on the family. “They were constantly threatened with defamation and legal implications. My nephews and sister succumbed to the mental torture inflicted upon them,” he said, his voice choking with emotion.
Before their deaths, the brothers left a suicide note accusing Neetu Kanwar and her family of being responsible for their plight. Navratan handed the note, along with a gold chain, to his jeweler friend Pintu, asking him to safeguard it. The note requested that justice be sought against those named and included instructions to donate proceeds from the chain’s sale to a local cowshed.
On the morning of December 10, Pradeep gave the bundle containing the note to Pintu, stating he would return to collect it in the evening. Sensing something amiss, Pintu opened the bundle and discovered the note. Despite alerting Pradeep and contacting relatives, the situation spiraled out of control. When the police and villagers reached the house, all three family members were found unconscious with foam around their mouths. They were rushed to the hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead.
The family’s troubles began years ago when Navratan and Pradeep’s father, a successful businessman, died in a factory fire in 2012. The brothers worked hard to rebuild their lives by joining a finance company. However, the constant harassment following Navratan’s marriage proved to be the breaking point.
The Osian police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against Neetu Kanwar, Lal Singh, and Shravan Singh based on the family’s allegations and the contents of the suicide note. Two individuals, including Neetu, have been detained for questioning. According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhopal Singh Lakhawat, the investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being made to gather all necessary evidence.
The small village of Bigmi remains in shock, grappling with the loss of three lives. Navratan and Pradeep were known for their active presence on social media, often sharing reels on Instagram. Before taking their lives, they deleted their accounts, leaving behind a digital silence.
The grieving family, supported by villagers, staged a sit-in protest demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. The protest lasted for nearly 30 hours before assurances from the police brought it to an end.
