Maharashtra: 9 Policemen Injured, 50 Arrested Following Parbhani Violence Over Ambedkar Memorial, Section 187 Imposed

Parbhani: Tensions erupted in Maharashtra’s Parbhani district on Tuesday after an attempt to vandalize a replica of the Constitution at the Ambedkar Memorial near Parbhani Railway Station. The incident, involving a man later identified as Sopan Dattarao Pawar (45), escalated into widespread violence, resulting in injuries, arrests, and significant property damage.

Police officials have registered eight cases related to the unrest, and 50 individuals have been arrested for their involvement in rioting and vandalism. Inspector General (IG) Shahaji Umap reported that nine policemen, including a sub-inspector, sustained injuries during clashes with the violent crowd.

The unrest began when Pawar attempted to damage the Constitution replica, prompting a group of locals to beat him severely. Despite police intervention and the arrest of Pawar, protests continued. On Wednesday, a city-wide bandh was called, leading to widespread stone-pelting, arson, and the vandalization of the Collector’s office. Residential areas also came under attack, further heightening tensions.

Authorities revealed that Pawar, the accused, is undergoing treatment, and preliminary investigations suggest he is mentally unstable. “I appeal to the public to maintain peace and not escalate the situation,” IG Umap urged during a press briefing.

To restore order, Section 187 of the Bombay Police Act (similar to Section 144 of the IPC) was imposed, prohibiting public gatherings in the city. Additionally, a company of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) was deployed to maintain law and order. IG Umap confirmed that the situation has stabilized, and peace has been restored after two days of unrest.

The violence drew sharp criticism from political leaders. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi questioned the state government’s inaction, pointing out the absence of a Home Minister. “The CM and Deputy CM are in Delhi, while violence is unfolding in Parbhani. Will the state be governed from Delhi?” she remarked.

In response, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar assured the public that the situation is now under control, and law enforcement agencies are taking all necessary measures to ensure peace.

Protesters, during the bandh, demanded the death penalty for Pawar, the accused in the desecration attempt. However, police officials emphasized the importance of maintaining order and avoiding further escalation of violence.

CCTV footage of the incidents is being examined to identify more individuals involved in the rioting. Authorities reiterated their commitment to taking strict action against those responsible.
