Hindu Teen Allegedly Killed After Brutal Assault by Minor Islamist Youths While Protecting Friend

Shivamogga: A 15-year-old Hindu boy was allegedly strangled and beaten to death after being attacked by a group of minor Islamist youths in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district, triggering local outrage and renewed concerns over youth violence, narcotics abuse, and communal tensions in the region. The incident occurred on the evening of Monday, February 23, in the Urgadur area, close to a government high school, where the victim had gone to attend special classes.

The deceased has been identified as Sanket (16), a student who, according to preliminary reports, lost his life while attempting to intervene in an altercation and protect his friend Girish, who was being assaulted by a group of minor Islamist boys. The incident has sparked widespread grief and anger, particularly among local residents, who allege that critical aspects of the case are being downplayed in sections of mainstream media reporting.

According to information reported by OpIndia and corroborated by police statements, the incident took place around 8 pm when Sanket and Girish were returning home after attending special classes at a government high school near 14th Cross in the Urgadur locality. As they passed an open ground behind the school premises, Girish was confronted by a group of boys, several of whom were reportedly school dropouts and known to the victims.

What began as a verbal altercation quickly escalated into physical violence. Girish was allegedly attacked by the group, prompting Sanket to step in with the intention of defusing the situation and preventing further harm to his friend. Instead, Sanket himself became the target of a brutal assault.

Shivamogga Superintendent of Police B. Nikhil confirmed that Sanket suffered severe injuries during the confrontation. “The boy sustained a fatal blow to the chest and injuries to his face and abdomen,” SP Nikhil told the media. He added that Sanket collapsed shortly after the assault.

Girish immediately alerted Sanket’s family members and nearby residents. The injured boy was rushed to a hospital without delay, but doctors declared him dead on arrival, dealing a devastating blow to his family and the local community.

Police officials stated that all individuals involved in the incident are minors and that the accused youths were previously known to the victim, having studied in the same institution at an earlier time. Two minor Islamist youths have been taken into custody for questioning, and a case has been registered at the Tunga Nagar Police Station. Investigations are ongoing to determine the precise sequence of events and the extent of involvement of others allegedly present at the scene.

Following the incident, tensions briefly flared in parts of Shivamogga, particularly in the Sulebailu-Urgadur belt, an area that locals say has witnessed Hindu-Muslim tensions in the past. In response, authorities deployed additional police personnel to prevent any escalation and to maintain law and order.

Senior officials have appealed for calm while assuring Sanket’s family that strict legal action will be taken against all those responsible. However, the assurances have done little to quell public anger, especially amid allegations that as many as six Muslim boys were involved in the attack.

Sanket’s family has been left shattered by the loss. His elder sister, Supriya, speaking on February 24, expressed deep anguish and warned that the family would be compelled to take extreme steps if justice was not delivered. She also raised concerns about increasing narcotics abuse among local youths, alleging that drug addiction has become a major contributor to rising violence in the area.

“These boys are ruining lives under the influence of drugs. My brother tried to stop violence and paid with his life,” she said, demanding exemplary punishment for all the accused.

In a heart-wrenching account, Sanket’s mother recalled her son leaving home earlier that day to attend special classes in preparation for his examinations. She said he had bid farewell twice to her and his grandmother before stepping out, unaware that it would be his final goodbye.

Describing Sanket as a sincere, disciplined, and academically bright student, she said he consistently performed well in school and had recently scored good marks in tests. Family members noted that he woke up early every morning to study and was deeply focused on building a better future through education. On the day of the incident as well, Sanket had begun studying at dawn before heading out.

Locals and members of the victim’s family have criticised sections of the mainstream media for, as they allege, diluting the seriousness of the incident by referring to the assailants merely as “unknown persons” or “minors,” without acknowledging the full context. They argue that ignoring the background of communal tensions and allegations of drug abuse among local youths amounts to selective reporting.

The incident has reignited debate over law and order in Karnataka under the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government. Critics say the killing of a Hindu minor who lost his life while trying to prevent violence reflects a deeper failure of policing, social regulation, and preventive governance. Concerns over Islamist youth violence, narcotics abuse, and recurring communal flashpoints have heightened public anxiety about safety and accountability.
