Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Tension flared at the Government Engineering College (GEC) in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar after a confrontation between Ambedkarite activists and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) members over a membership registration drive. Police have now registered an FIR against nine Ambedkarite activists for allegedly harassing and threatening RSS workers during the altercation.
According to reports, RSS members had initiated a membership registration drive at the college on October 14. Upon learning about the event, Ambedkarite activists, led by Vijay Wahul, opposed the activity, claiming that the RSS was a religious organisation and its presence violated the secular nature of educational institutions.
The activists demanded that the drive be halted immediately. However, after it resumed on Wednesday, the confrontation intensified, leading to verbal clashes between both groups. Police intervened to prevent escalation and later filed a case against the activists based on complaints from RSS members.
Vijay Wahul maintained that “there should not be any religious intervention in educational institutions” and urged authorities to keep campuses free from political or religious influence.
