Brahmin MBBS Student Commits Suicide, Discriminated for Practising Religion in Indore

Indore: In a tragic incident, Panshul Vyas, a second-year MBBS student at MGM Medical College, Indore, was found dead by suicide in his family home in Ujjain on Tuesday afternoon. The 20-year-old’s body was discovered hanging from a noose by his mother and younger sister at approximately 2:30 p.m. The incident has shocked the community, with allegations of harassment and religious discrimination emerging against Vyas’s roommates.

According to reports, Panshul had been troubled for months due to harassment by his roommates, Saral Jain and Aditya Jain, who allegedly pressured him with religious discussions about Jainism. Panshul, who topped the NEET exam in Ujjain two years ago, had confided in a close friend through chat messages that his roommates’ behavior had caused him severe distress and depression. No suicide note was found, but police have retrieved chats from his mobile indicating prolonged mental harassment.

Panshul’s mother, Pallavi Vyas, a school teacher, has labeled her son’s death as a murder, accusing his roommates of driving him to suicide through continuous harassment. “My son has been murdered. A case should be registered against both the boys. They were forcing Jainism on him and mentally torturing him,” Pallavi said. She further revealed that Panshul had shown signs of distress in recent weeks, especially after the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, but the family was unaware of the extent of his struggles.

Panshul’s father, Santosh Vyas, a professor at a local engineering college, along with Pallavi, had no inkling of their son’s deteriorating mental health. They were planning a family trip to Vaishno Devi before the tragedy occurred.

Chats recovered from Panshul’s phone paint a grim picture of his mental state in the days leading up to his death. In messages exchanged with a friend, Panshul expressed deep despair, stating that he felt overwhelmed by the actions of his roommates. “I feel like dying, I really can’t handle this much mental stress,” one of the messages read. In another, he voiced frustration over the constant religious discussions initiated by his roommates: “They have daily meetings on how to spread Jainism… I am depressed, that’s why I have come to Ujjain today.”

Panshul also mentioned feeling isolated and disgusted, stating that his flat mates had stopped communicating with him and that he had considered running away to avoid doing “something wrong.”

Ujjain’s Nanakheda police station has registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Panshul’s death. As of now, no formal charges have been filed against his roommates. The police are also analyzing the recovered chats and interviewing close friends and family members to gather more information about the harassment claims.

Panshul had been sharing a rented room in Indore with his two roommates since March of this year. His family remains adamant that his death was the result of sustained mental torture and have urged the authorities to take swift action against the accused.
