Chandigarh: The Punjab government has rolled back its discriminatory policy on providing free electricity to the people of the state. It was alleged by the opposition parties that the newly formed govt is doing discrimination against the general category.
It was said earlier that the SC/BC/ST category consumers will have to pay for extra units if they exceed the mark of 600 units. However, the general category consumers won’t get these exemptions. The scheme attracts criticism from the opposition parties.
Reacting to allegations of discrimination, Power Minister Harbhajan Singh said the benefits of free power scheme will be available to all categories of consumers irrespective of their caste.
Singh said, “We have not discriminated against any caste or category. The benefits of this scheme will be available to all consumers till they use 600 units.”
The minister further clarified that even the consumers belonging to the special categories will have to pay the entire bill amount if they consume more than 600 units.
