Maharashtra Government Triples Salaries of Madrasa Teachers, Implements Welfare Initiatives

Mumbai: In a major decision, the BJP-led Mahayuti government of Maharashtra has tripled the salaries of Madrasa teachers. This move, taken ahead of the state assembly polls scheduled for next month, is seen as part of a series of steps by the government to address the needs of these communities.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday. Primary teachers with a Diploma in Education (D.Ed.) qualification will see their monthly salary increase from ₹6,000 to ₹16,000. Similarly, secondary school teachers with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree will now earn ₹18,000, up from ₹8,000.

This salary hike is part of a broader Madrasa modernization initiative spearheaded by the state government under the leadership of Zakir Hussain Madrasa. The modernization efforts include incorporating modern subjects such as science, mathematics, sociology, English, Marathi, Hindi, and Urdu alongside traditional religious education in Madrasas.

Additionally, the working capital of the Maulana Azad Financial Corporation, which supports minority welfare programs, will be increased from ₹600 crore to ₹1,000 crore. The additional funding is expected to be directed toward improving education and enhancing socio-economic opportunities for the Muslim community.

The state cabinet also approved welfare cooperative boards for several backward castes, including Shimpi, Gavali, Lad Shakiya-Wani, Lohar, and Nam Panth. These boards will be provided with ₹50 crore in investment capital to encourage various social and community activities.

In another significant move, the government has raised the income limit for ‘non-creamy layer’ reservation in the OBC category. Previously set at ₹8 lakh per year, the limit has now been raised to ₹15 lakh, extending reservation benefits to a larger section of the population.

A draft ordinance to grant constitutional status to the Maharashtra State Scheduled Caste Commission was also approved. The ordinance, which will be presented in the next session of the state legislature, aims to reinforce the legal status of the commission, with 27 posts created for the body.
